Ooooooh, the beach! I think the beach is magical. Any beach. We went to the beach a few times during our week in California. Even though the water was a bit chilly, and the wind blew a little one day, the girls still wanted to get wet and the beach retained its magic for me.
We tried to catch the sunset at the beach the second day we were there.
Brita claimed to hate the beach. Sometimes I believed her...
And sometimes I didn't...
Until they got tired of that and decided it was time to move onto other things.
Or throwing mud into the water (because no rocks could be found - another irresistible pastime).
One decided it was time to warm up.
Jared grossed all of us out with slimy creepy crawly things that he's always so good at finding...
Let's get a closer look at that thing.
I tried to throw a kid into the ocean, but decided to search for seashells with her instead.
She found some good ones I tell ya. But unfortunately, her expression quickly went from this...

To this...
when she learned that sea shells can no longer be collected and removed from the beach. She requested that I take a picture of her holding each shell while she gave her most somber and upset expression. She doesn't get upset very often, but this completely broke her heart and my heart broke for her.
At that point, it was time to pack up and get back to Doug and Isabel's. We gathered up our shoes and rushed to get out of the cold,
leaving the night waves to claim the sand castles that had been built by tiny, curious hands.

We re-lived the good memories of the day, relaxed, and continued building relationships with some of the people we love most.

Ahhhh, I love the beach! SO MUCH. I'm glad you had a nice trip. I have a VERY important question, though -- what did you do with the dog while you were on your trip?
Oh, the dog! Luckily Jared has an awesome brother and sister-in-law who let him share an outdoor kennel with their dog when we go out of town. It's a challenge to arrange for animal care when you're gone, isn't it?!
Oh man, you are SO lucky. Yes, it is a challenge!
