Science Kid

When notes came home this year about the school science fair, Leah couldn't wait to participate. She almost missed her chance because she kept forgetting to pick up an application, but on the LAST day she kept reminding herself between the car and the doors to the school to make a stop at the school office before going to class. Have I mentioned before that she's easily distracted?

She was enthusiastic about her project from the beginning and all ideas were her very own. She wanted to know what kind of light helps plants grow the best. So we had a fun Saturday of planting, taking photos and strategically placing all three plants throughout the house so they would receive different kinds and levels of light. One was placed near the kitchen window, the other in a bathroom with the light left on all day (no sunlight) and the other in a dark linen closet with no light.

Over the two-week experimental period, she watered the plants, measured them, and counted their leaves as well as recorded her visual observations. She was such a cute little freckle-faced scientist. I lost a little patience toward the end of putting her poster together, but I apologized for yelling and she forgave me. She always does.

Yesterday she had to explain her project to the judges and she read almost an entire Junie B. Jones book in between her little interviews. While other kids were running around like wild, my kid was sitting quietly demonstrating excellent behavior. I can always say this about her. (I think her good behavior is somehow directly correlated to her freckles. Maybe I'll do a science experiment to test my hypothesis next year.)

In the afternoon, when Jared and I walked into the science fair she was standing in front of her poster with all TWELVE of her ribbons and a FOURTH-PLACE finish!

Way to go Leah! Love those freckles. And the science project is worth bragging about too!

You must be so proud! I am jealous that she read while all the other kids bounced off the wall. I also will join you in the freckles research. Seth has them and he is the one kid out of the four that is the best behaved. I could do that Sesame Street bit called "One of these things is not like the other" and it would be him and my other 3 kids.
