The worst idea ever
Now that the debates are in full swing, what's the worst idea you've ever heard from a politician? Obama promising to raise taxes in the face of a recession borders on economic suicide, but that's not as bad as proposing that the Feds take over "volunteer" service. Let's face it, the Peace Corps is for directionless losers who want to smoke dope and hang out in a foreign country while getting paid to do so. Anyone serious about life or their career would opt for the military instead. This is Obama's answer to what sacrifices we need to make as a country! A massive government program to pay "volunteers" to do whatever the liberal Democrats deem worthy service is his idea of sacrifice?! Heaven help us if that smooth talking moron gets elected.

Wow, harsh words for the Peace Corps! Do you really think that? I mean, Obama stuff aside? What about activisits who really DO care to help but are personally opposed to war and violence? Clue me in here, because when I was in West Africa, it was pretty much us, the natives, and the Peace Corps. Now you've got me curious to hear more . . .
The reason it's such a horrible idea is it's a big government power grab. Now why would anyone do any service as a true volunteer, when they could get money for doing it for the government? And the worst part is the government decides what the service entails. With Obama and the lefties in power you can bet on projects such as building abortion clinics in Africa getting funded by us taxpayers.
Sadly, I can't imagine we're going to have much money for foreign aid like that. Biden listed it as one of the things that they might not be able to deliver given the state of the economy. I think Palin's vague answer was the ubiquitous political promise of "getting rid of government waste."
I agree that "getting rid of government waste" is a useless argument. Tell us where you're going to cut. How about farm subsidies, foreign aid (which amounts to welfare for poor countries that perversely keeps them poor) or reforming medicare and social security. By the way, Obama uses the same phrases as Palin to explain how he's going to fund his proposed increases in federal spending.
No politician has the courage to say "we're going to cut social security benefits" even though that's obviously what has to happen. McCain talking about a spending freeze was the most courageous thing I've ever heard a politician say.
Yeah, but if he said "Mah Friennnd" after it, I tuned it out. :P
It's easy to get distracted by annoying mannerisms. I just wish more voters could get past that stuff and down to substance. If not we're going to elect a guy who sounds great, but has disguised his agenda behind generalities and platitudes that sound good.
Well, sadly, I think the substance is lacking, too. I don't care for either of their health care plans. There are things I don't like about each of them. But for me, I look at the big picture and my gut feeling. I tease about the mannerisms, but that's just because they're funny. They're not determining my vote, but they are providing comic relief in all of this!
