Our Rocker Girl

So Leah plays the electric guitar and she is in a band. How freakin' cool is that?! I didn't know opportunities like that even existed for kids. But they do and I am thrilled.

Because Leah is just an awesome kid, she endured a few years of piano lessons but she knew she didn't want to keep going with piano. When she expressed her dislike for piano and said she wanted to play the electric guitar instead, I, who took piano for 10+ years and entered into motherhood with the mindset that my children would learn to play the piano and would love it as much as I, had to step back and ask myself if that was really okay.

Jared and I finally decided we wanted her to continue with piano until she reached a certain level of musical knowledge and then we agreed that it was fine to let her branch out and pursue her interest. She saved her pennies, and a year before we even enrolled her in electric guitar lessons, she bought her own electric guitar.

We found an amazing musician named Dave who has set up a Rock Lab where kids (and even some adults) learn guitar, keyboards, voice and bass. Once his students reach a basic level, he puts them in a band with other students close to their same level. Leah's band name is Shtoink and they have gigs.

This is the most recent gig where her band played - it was an open house that a realtor was organizing and she wanted it to be a big shindig. Every time Leah has a concert or a gig, she wears her rocker wig and it really makes her rock out. It's total awesomeness. At this particular gig, the band's singer had to go out of town suddenly two days before, so Leah stepped in and sang lead on a couple of the songs. She nailed it.

I present to you my rocker girl. In all her glory...with her band Shtoink (and her teacher who stepped in to sing one of the heavy metal songs).
