The Halloween party at church was a chance for the whole family to dress up. Rachelle made me be a pirate with her. I liked the long dreadlocks and skull necklace, but the Peter Pan pants she made out of my green sweats were kind of lame. Rachelle looked stunning. If I was a pirate deckhand, she was the captain in her high heeled boots. Unfortunately, combined with her insistence on staying and cleaning up after, those heels caused some back problems the next day. Megan wore the traditional ladybug outfit that all the girls have worn on their first Halloween. Leah was “half witch, half fairy and half pirate”, and Brita was a tiger. Our camera broke, so photos will be inserted when we can get them from friends.
Leah has an interesting fascination with death. She loves to look at cemeteries for instance. This week while reading a biography about Rosa Parks she stopped me to say that the part in biographies she finds most interesting is “learning about when the people die.”
We did the flu shots drama this week. Last year was a fiasco with full blown screaming, biting, fighting tantrum by Brita. So this year Rachelle prepared her with breathing exercises like those that women in labor do. It worked pretty well. When she started to panic, Rachelle would get her into the deep breathing and it was over before she knew it. Leah refused to even be nervous. “I’m just not going to care about it” she said. So she danced around the room until it was her turn, then watched the procedure and laughed as soon as it was over.
Megan is doing age appropriate activities that aren’t too exciting but require documentation. She pulls herself up to things, crawls into the cupboard after toys, has 5 teeth, likes to imitate, and says “Dada” whenever I ask her who her favorite person is. One tidbit of interest is that she utterly refuses baby food or anybody spoon feeding her at the ripe old age of 9 months. She likes refried beans, so we stick a gob on a spoon and give it to her to lick off.
We found a garage sale Saturday that was a fun shopping spree. We encouraged Brita and Leah to shop for Christmas presents for Meg. Leah picked one out of the first box after about 1.5 seconds of careful consideration. Brita wanted to know if there were any cheaper toys than those in the $.50 box. Then after agonizing for a while she found something suitable in the $.25 box. Meanwhile Leah, determined to spend ALL her money, dug through the pile of stuffed animals, and she spent all the rest of it on a little lion for herself. Brita is a saver, but still bought a box of craft supplies that she thought was a great deal.

I enjoy your recaps, Jared. And I love how the title of this one is a smidgen of what's in the post, but still clearly a big deal! One of the best Christmas letters we've ever gotten was from you guys in Medical School--hiLARious.
Yeah Jared, the Peter Pan pants were kind of lame. But mostly because you wouldn't let me get any of the wrinkles out of them before you wore them to the party.
And Brita's craft supplies were a steal at $0.25 for a big "miscellaneous" box that only had half the supplies necessary to complete each project. She decided to take on the challenge of trying to create things with the random supplies though--way to go Brita!
Peter Pan pants: Even I know that you don't iron sweats.
"Rachelle looked stunning" What a sweet thing to say. You are a good sport to dress up, I tried to get Michael to get into a costume for ours... nope.
Peter Pan pants: Yeah, but a few minutes in the dryer can do wonders. I still love you anyway, even if you are a wrinkled mess sometimes.
Okay...what's more entertaining? Reading the post or the comments between husband and wife??
Love the recaps--life is good!
LOL I agree with natalie:)
