Swimming Lessons

Summer is rolling on. One of the rites of summer for me as a kid was swimming lessons, and we decided not to deprive Brita and Leah of that experience. We've had them in private 1 on 1 lessons before, but we tried a class setting this time.

The teacher was a tough-as-nails retired swim coach from BYU. She was demanding and often shouting instructions. Brita responded by trying very hard to please her. Meanwhile Leah pretty much ignored her and dog paddled in her own way, not intimidated in the least. Usually it took Rachelle calling her over and explaining to her what the teacher wanted, after which a light bulb went on, she said "Oh, OK" and then continued dog paddling her own way.

The first few minutes at the first class our two lovely siblings started arguing about goggles.
Brita: "I wish somebody had remembered to bring my goggles" with dirty looks at Mom.
Leah: At least you HAVE goggles.
Brita: You have goggles, you just lost them.
Leah: No I don't.
Brita: Yes you do!

It went on like this with escalating venom in their voices. I'm sure all the other moms and the swim teacher were impressed.

Overall it was a success, as Brita did things in the class situation with the peer pressure that she wouldn't do otherwise, and Leah managed to get more confidence and improved her skills. But next year we're putting them in separate classes.

Agreed. So many parents have experiences just like this, but they never make it to the blogs. Thanks for a good laugh.

Classic! I had to do private lessons for my kids otherwise they all just screwed around while they were on the wall waiting in groups. At least they weren't shouting I hate you Mom!
