Jared has worked hard to make us a skiing family. Since we moved to Utah almost five years ago, he has sacrificed many would-be black diamonds to teach his girls how to maneuver the slopes.
Teaching Brita to ski got off to a really rocky start. I remember even bribing her in fourth grade to ski. We ended up buying her the Wii Mario Kart game for skiing five times that season. After that, we decided that she never needed to ski another day if she didn't want to, but she's surprised us by continuing to go. Sometimes it's hard to know if we're doing the right thing as parents, but apparently forcing and bribing Brita to go to ski school those three years ago was the right thing to do. Leah, on the other hand, loved skiing from the start and to this day she goes anytime she's given an invitation.
This year Jared decided it wasn't worth the pain to teach his last daughter how to ski, so he turned the reigns over to the Sundance ski instructors and it was totally worth the price. First off, just looking at Meg all decked out in her pink pants, gloves, and hat completely melted my heart. She is girly girl to the core. I loved the gloves Jared bought her - they are kind of like gators except for her arms. Anyway, Meg was originally undecided as to whether or not she wanted to learn to ski, so I was relieved that she didn't dig her heels in too deeply and resist all together. She finally decided to listen to all of us (love how big sisters can be a positive influence) and give it a try.
On her first day skiing, I even hung out in the lodge while everyone was on the slopes so I could take some pictures. Turns out I didn't do a very good job because the light was so bright and I couldn't see my camera displays correctly - I thought I took a lot of pictures that I actually never took. Kind of disappointing, but I at least got a few precious snapshots...
Turns out that the girls and Jared were all disappointed that I hung out in the lodge. Due to all the pressure, the next time they all went skiing, I took a lesson myself and actually enjoyed it. Who knows, Jared may get his dream of a skiing family after all.
