Dad's Birthday

We love to celebrate birthdays around here. We always get together with my sister and her family the week of the special somebody's birthday and this week my dad's birthday is coming up. He's someone worth celebrating and he makes life fun for all of us.

I of course am flooded with childhood memories that include my dad. One thing I'm sure of is that my dad loves me a lot. Like many parents of young children, I have a different respect for my parents now. Choosing to be a parent is a heavy responsibility and in order to do it well, you have to be committed and patient and willing to wade through a lot of tough days.

Because my parents gave me such a loving, safe home as a kid, I want to do the same for my kids. I look at my kids and I see hope and promise in their futures. Some of that is just because of who they are and some of it is because they're getting off to a good start by being part of a loving, safe family. A cycle that was gifted to me from my parents and hopefully I'm gifting the same to my little ones. Cycles can be healthy just as easily as they can be destructive and I can't believe how blessed I was to get caught up in one of the healthy ones.

My dad always trusted me and our relationship becomes more and more sweet the older I get. He makes me laugh and he makes me happy. I sure love him.

And I sure love how he hams it up at all the right moments...like when we're singing Happy Birthday to him with gusto.

Happy Birthday to one of my favorite guys.
